College Basketball Records

The Greenbears began having college contests as a way to increase interest in college games, by giving the members a few extra teams to root for.

When we began, we placed schools in groups of four to seven somewhat equal teams, and then created six groups (usually). Each member picked one school from each group, giving him six teams to root for throughout the season. The drawback was that some teams were favored by everyone, and some teams were never chosen by anyone.

In 1997, we experimented with picking games against an arbitrary point spread in advance for the entire year, then added another round for the tournament. In 1998, we returned to the "team grouping" format. But in 1999, we settled on the point spread format. We began using computer ratings to determine the spreads, and split the regular season into two halves, giving us three phases of play. In 2000, we added the additional factor of ranking your 7 picks from 7 (best) to 1 (worst) for each weekend's games. This added more challenge and difference between picks, and essentially allowed each player to set his own value for each game.

The Commissioner has read about other sports fans around the country who have reported holding similar contests. So, it seems that our idea is not original or unique, but it is interesting nevertheless.

Here are the standings for every season, plus the winning set of teams, if applicable:
