2001 College Basketball Contest Rules 1. First phase: pick the teams which will beat the spread (NOT just the game winners) in all the first half regular season games listed on this form. Picks will be graded against a point spread determined by the Commissioner during the preseason. (Those are currently based on the Sagarin computer ratings.) Those spreads will be listed on the picksheet. ALL the spreads listed on the picksheets refer to the HOME TEAM (unless it is a "neutral" site game, in which case the spread refers to the second team listed on the picksheet.) So, a "-" by the spread number means that the home team is favored and must win by more points than that number; a "+" means that the home team is the underdog and can either win outright, or lose by any spread less than that number and they will still "cover the spread." Any score landing exactly on the spread number is a "push" but will count as a loss for all players. If the spread is "Even" (E) or if there is no line (NL - such as for tournaments), simply pick the game winner. 2. Then, after picking the games, rank each week's picks from 6 to 1, based on your confidence in them. (6 would be your best bet; 1 would be the pick you had the least confidence in.) If there are more or fewer games in any given group, use that number for your best bet, and work down to 1 (for example, start at 7 instead of 6 if there are 7 games in a group.) Do not duplicate numbers; each game in a given week must have its own ranking. (You can't rank them all as 6s or all 1s, for example.) Each correct pick you make is worth the number of "greenbucks" (standings points) you assigned that game with your rankings. So you determine the values of your picks through your rankings. For each incorrect pick, you receive zero greenbucks. 3. There will be a second phase of the contest for the second half of the season. Point spreads will be established based on a new set of Sagarin ratings (probably in early January), and the second half picksheet will then be sent to all players. After that, players will be allowed to call or mail in their remaining selections and rankings once (and only once). Your picksheet will state when the second half of the season begins, so be aware of the deadline date. 4. There will be a third phase of the contest for the NCAA Tournament. All the NCAA Tournament games will be "pick the winners" only, no point spreads will be used (to make it easier for players to complete their brackets.) Picksheets will be sent out immediately after the NCAA tournament is set. If anyone does not submit all their NCAA Tournament picks before the first tournament game, then they will not be eligible for any tournament points. The method of picking and grouping college tournament games will go as follows (see the 1999 tournament brackets for a color-coded example of how the groupings work):
5. Whoever scores the most greenbucks from regular season and tournament games, will be the contest winner. There is no entry fee, and there will be no payout; this is not gambling! This contest is generally open only to Greenbears pro basketball league members, although the Commissioner may waive this rule at his discretion. Deadline for all entries is 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 5. Don't call in for results during the contest, please. You will receive a list of all players' picks, so you can also keep score yourself. Results will also be posted on our website occasionally, on our Stats Page. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Directions: simply write in or circle your pick from the games list; choose the team which you think will beat the point spread in each game. Then rank each week's games from 6 to 1, with 6 as your best bet. Do not duplicate numbers in a group. For a list of games, including dates and TV listings, consult the official Greenbears picksheet.
