Ten Biggest Upsets Earlier this year, I promised some special features to commemorate our tenth anniversary. Here is the latest one. We previously listed the 10 worst teams in Greenbears history. This month, here are the 10 biggest Greenbears upsets, as chosen by your Commissioner in reviewing our record books: 10. (tie) Gorillas beat Commandos, 1999 GFL. Gulf Bay was 12th, and had only Corey Dillon as a healthy offensive starting player, yet they upset the league's #2 team. It would have ranked higher if it had cost Canton a playoff spot (and it almost did.) 10. (tie) Rattlers win consolation, 1997 GBA. Raleigh was just 3-14, last in the GBA, but were without David Robinson due to an injury most of the season. Robinson came back just as the consolation tournament started, and the Rattlers rolled to an upset win. 9. Sharks beat Matadors, 1995 LNBA. Cincinnati was 8-7 while Miami was 12-3, but the Sharks won the final series 3-1. 8. Marauders take 2nd, 1991 LNFL. Michigan was fourth with one week left, yet tallied the season's highest point total in Week 17 to jump 2 spots. (Meanwhile, "Sal's" team had all his Buffalo Bills rest, scored almost zero, and dropped from 2nd to 4th.) 7. Sharks rally to take title, 1997 GBA. After winning Game One, the Sharks went for the sweep against the MinuteMen, but found themselves down by almost 100 points after two days of Game Two. Then they rallied with 30+ point performances from all their starters, and won 188-183 on the last day. 6. "Fumbles" takes first place, 1995 CBB. It was his only CBB contest, and he was next-to-last in 1994 CFB, but this former Hagerstown football player took the top prize in the 95 CBB contest anyway. He moved to another state shortly thereafter, so the Greenbears never got a rematch. 5. Sharks upset Shooters, 1994 LNBA. John's Hickory Shooters were 17-3 overall, but suffered some major injuries at the end. They slipped by the Hounds 2-1 in the semifinals, but lost 3-0 in the finals to the 12-8 Cincinnati Sharks. 4. Nightmares knock out Bombers, 1996 LNBA. Fourth seeded N.Y. won the first game against B.G., but wasted a 50 point game by Michael Jordan in losing the second game. Then they surprised the top seeds with the highest scoring game of the year, eliminating the Bombers 2-1. 3. "Katie" becomes only woman winner, 1994 CBB. Brian had the lead going into the tournament, but when his #1 North Carolina team was upset by Boston College, they dropped 2 points behind Michigan in the final poll (despite having a better record.) That moved "Katie" and "Liddy" (both women, both having Michigan) up into the top two spots, and "Katie" won on a tiebreaker. 2. Brooklyn outscores three, 1995 LNFL. Struggling at 3-4, the Highlanders won six consecutive games just to tie for second place, and gained a spot in the playoffs on a loophole in the rules and an appeal. Then they had the high score two out of three weeks, outscoring three other teams with higher season point totals, to win the GFL title. 1. South Baltimore stuns Brooklyn, 1996 LNFL. The Alikats were 6-9, and only got a playoff spot when two teams didn't finish the season. They won their semifinal game, and beat the defending champs from Brooklyn in the championship game. It was the first real title run that this team ever made in several years of LNFL.
