2000 GULB Playoffs and Wayne Series

Here are the 2000 Wayne Series game scores and summaries:

Lions vs. Knights:

Game 7: Knights 20, Lions 11. Nomar Garciaparra and Fernando Tatis homered in the 1st inning, and Indiana pounded formerly-reliable Andy Ashby for nine runs in the first two innings, as the Knights won their first Wayne Series 4-3. Curt Schilling allowed seven runs in seven innings, but got the win nevertheless.
The Knights scored all their runs in the first four innings, capped by a nine-run 4th inning. The Lions hit well but committed four errors; Robin Ventura's two-out error in the 2nd cost Virginia four runs, and broke the game open. Roberto Alomar and Vlad Guerrero homered in the 3rd, but Virginia was already too far behind to catch up. The Lions made the final innings interesting with six runs in the 8th off an ineffective Scott Williamson.

Game 6: Lions 9, Knights 8. Virginia opened a 6-0 lead against loser Jose Lima, then Randy Johnson held on, as the Lions tied the series at 3-3. Sammy Sosa and Ivan Rodriguez hit RBI singles in the 1st inning, and Robin Ventura's two-run homer capped a four-run 3rd for the Lions. Virginia led 9-3 by the 7th, but home runs by Chris Widger and Jeff Bagwell made it 9-6. Fernando Tatis then hit a two-run, two-out single off Jeff Shaw in the 9th to make it 9-8, before John Rocker got Doug Glanville to fly out to Sosa, ending the game.

Game 5: Knights 7, Lions 2. Indiana scored four early runs against starter Todd Ritchie, and Kevin Millwood allowed only two runs in seven innings, as the Knights went up 3-2 in the series. Vlad Guerrero homered in the 4th to cut Indiana's lead to 4-2. But John Rocker struggled in the 7th, allowing a two-out RBI single by Shawn Green and a two-run homer by Jeff Bagwell. Roberto Hernandez got the save.

Game 4: Lions 5, Knights 2. Andy Ashby pitched 6 2/3 strong innings, and both Alex and Ivan Rodriguez homered off loser Omar Daal, as Virginia evened the series at 2-2. Fernando Tatis' homer gave the Knights an early 1-0 lead, before Virginia rallied several times in the middle innings. John Rocker retired Craig Biggio in the 7th with two runners in scoring position, and Jeff Shaw got Mike Cameron to line out to Alex Rodriguez with two on in the 9th, to end two late Indiana rallies.

Game 3: Knights 15, Lions 4. Virginia's Randy Johnson allowed six runs in six innings, and Indiana scored nine more late runs off four Virginia relievers, as the Knights went ahead in the series, 2-1. Curt Schilling went the distance for the win. Barry Bonds homered twice for Indiana, and Luis Gonzalez hit three homers in a losing effort, giving him five in only three series games.

Game 2: Knights 6, Lions 4. Jeff Bagwell and Carlos Delgado homered in a five-run 2nd inning against Pete Harnisch, then Indiana held off a Lions' rally, as the Knights tied the series at 1-1. Alex Rodriguez and Luis Gonzalez each hit a pair of solo homers off Jose Lima, but failed to have any big innings. Roberto Hernandez retired the side in order in the 9th for the save.

Game 1: Lions 6, Knights 5. Vlad Guerrero and Sean Casey struck two-run homers in the 1st inning against Kevin Millwood, then Virginia held off a late rally, as the Lions took the series lead at 1-0. Andy Ashby was one out short of a complete game, but Barry Bonds hit a two-run homer in the 9th, bringing in John Rocker to get the save. Guerrero and Casey had three RBI each for the game, which had an early rain delay of 51 minutes.

Chargers vs. Knights:

Game 2: Knights 7, Chargers 5. Barry Bonds hit a 3-run homer in the first inning to give the Knights the lead, then homered again in the 8th inning to clinch the game, as the Knights tied the series at 1-1. After staking Jose Lima to a 6-1 lead against Bret Saberhagen, the Knights let the Chargers get within 6-5 in the 8th, before Bonds added the insurance run.

Game 1: Chargers 5, Knights 3. Greg Vaughn and Jim Edmonds hit back to back homers in the 6th inning, as Charlotte surprised Indiana to win the series opener. The Chargers scored two early runs before Carlos Delgado's two-run homer tied the game in the 4th inning. Then Vaughn and Edmonds unloaded on starter Kevin Millwood. Charles Nagy pitched a strong game for Charlotte. Nomar Garciaparra added a solo homer in the 9th for the losing Knights.

Aces vs. Lions:

Game 2: Lions 4, Aces 3. Ivan Rodriguez's two-out, 9th inning single scored Miguel Cairo with the winning run as the Lions went up 2-0 in the series. Pete Harnisch and Tom Glavine dueled throughout much of the game. The Lions led 2-0 following a Vladimir Guerrero round-tripper, before Mark McGwire's homer tied the game in the 6th inning. Manny Ramirez then made it back-to-back homers to put the Aces up 3-2. Guerrero answered in the bottom half with his second homer, tying the game again. Sammy Sosa singled to open the 9th and Cairo pinch ran for him. After another single, Cairo took third base on a sac fly, and scored on Pudge's line drive.

Game 1: Lions 10, Aces 0. Randy Johnson pitched a one-hit shutout and the Lions pounded Kevin Brown to win the opener. The only hit for the Aces was a leadoff single by Andruw Jones in the 4th inning. Johnson only walked one while striking out 10 batters. Every Lions starter except Alex Rodriguez had at least one RBI; Sammy Sosa and Sean Casey each homered off Brown.
