2000 GFL Pro Football Rules

This page was last updated on 8/13/00.

1. The GFL Draft will be held sometime after 8 a.m. on Friday, August 25, 2000 at Yahoo Sports. The Greenbears Commissioner does not administer this draft. Online owners should rank their players according to the instructions given on the Yahoo Sports website.

Offline owners should submit a proxy list of player rankings (a single overall list for all players, not a list divided by position) to the Commissioner in advance of this date, and he will set up your list online for you. If you do not rank players or submit a list, Yahoo Sports will draft your team by using a default player list, somewhat based on 1999 stats. Sign and date all proxy draft lists. Players not listed in any default player rankings will not be available.

2. Playing the game: each week, your players score points for your GFL team by their actual performances in pro football games. (See the default scoring table online and the roster rules.)

Understanding how to score is very important before you draft your players. In some leagues, players only get points for TDs. In the GFL, players also receive points for reaching certain yardage levels. Yahoo has the default scoring table online, which lists the ways that players can score. Our table will be slightly different; you will have to sign into Yahoo to see our scoring table.

Your team will play head-to-head games each week. The scores of your players will be added up to produce a team score each week. If you score more points than your opponent of the week does, you win the game. Of course, we will also keep track of your total points for the season, because it might be used as a tiebreaker at the end of the season.

3. Schedule and Playoffs: There are some minor changes in the lineups and rules since we used Sandbox for GFL stats in 1999, so please read the rules carefully. Two things that changed are the schedule (now evenly balanced), and the playoff format (Yahoo has one, Sandbox forced us to create our own).

For Greenbears league purposes, our regular season will end after Week 14. That should give everyone two games against every other team. Then we will have playoffs in Weeks 15 and 16.

The playoffs will include the four teams with the four best records. (Tiebreakers are listed in the rules at Yahoo Sports.) In the Week 15 semifinals, the team with the best record would play the fourth place team, while the second and third place teams would also meet. The two winners would meet in Week 16 in the Greenbears Bowl. (As always, we don't use Week 17.) The non-playoff teams would also continue to play in Weeks 15 and 16, in a consolation bracket to determine fifth through eighth places.

4. Making player moves: Online owners must do this themselves (see Yahoo rules.) Offline owners must make special arrangements with the Commissioner.

The contact information for offline owners has been changed. You can call the Commissioner's home number from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays only. Do not call the home number for any fantasy league transactions at other times, please. You should record your moves on voice mail (press *2 at the prompt) if necessary. Offline owners will not be able to make transactions on the weekends, but will be informed if the contact information changes again.

Stats for offline owners will include standings, scores, and a team boxscore. They will be printed by the Commissioner each week on Tuesday, and be available for pickup thereafter. Offline owners, please note that there will be a $15 fee for ordering weekly printed stats, or $5 for biweekly stats; postage not included.

5. Other Rules: Your team name must be acceptable and must have a geographic home area. (We cannot control names that online owners submit, but we will translate them to acceptable names on our website.) We have a long list of nicknames to help you, so if you want to use it, just click the link (or ask for a copy).

There will be NO prize money awarded. The fee is free for online leagues (although there are potential charges for offline owners -- see the Commissioner.) The Commissioner has authority to settle all disputes and interpret rules. His decisions are always final, and supercede anything decided by the Yahoo Commissioner (in the unlikely event of collusion.) Players must abide by these rules and the Greenbears Common Rules. By playing, you agree to these terms.

Many things not covered here are covered online at Yahoo Fantasy Football. Please check there for more on playing the game itself.
