Greenbears Update -- September 2000

Tim's Twin Towers Take Two

In this month's issue:
*** Knights Take First;
*** GULB Playoffs Set;
*** GFL Underway;
*** CFB Kicks Off;
*** NASCAR races on.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Tim's The Top

This month, we lead off with congratulations to Tim for the outstanding performances of his teams, beating the Commissioner's defending champion squads twice. In Greenbears Ultra League Baseball, Tim's Indiana Knights swept their final three-game series against the league-leading Virginia Lions, and took first place by two games. In GFL, Tim's Michigan Marauders posted the high score for Week 1, and defeated the two-time defending champion Florida Stingrays.

The Knights will meet the surprising Charlotte Chargers in the GULB semifinals. It will be the first playoff trip for the Chargers after two last-place finishes; they have been managed by the Commissioner since July. The Chargers narrowly edged out the Dayton Blackbirds and Ross Lake Yellow Sharks by one game each for the final playoff spot. The Lions will play the third place Aurora Emerald Aces. Both semifinal series and the Wayne Series will be seven games each, and all the playoff recaps and box scores will be available online.

Among teams that missed the playoffs, Chaz's Ross Lake Yellow Sharks had the strongest finish. They won 35 games after the trade deadline, and thereby receive the top draft pick in 2001. They will be followed in round one by the Blues (32), Blackbirds (28), and Roses (26). This draft order will be used whether we have a Diamond Mind league, ultra fantasy league, or both.

In the Greenbears single-season rotisserie league on Yahoo Sports, your Commissioner has taken the lead over Jeff B. for first place. The other four owners are still nearly even for third place. There is still time for everyone to make moves and make up ground in that contest.

Prose and Pros

The Greenbears Football League at Yahoo Sports had a successful first weekend. I want to encourage everyone to participate actively in the Yahoo league, just as you always have in Sandbox leagues. Yahoo has a better stat service, which you will enjoy once you use it for awhile.

Again, your Yahoo IDs and passwords are the same as or similar to the ones that you used on Sandbox. (If you don't remember them, ask the Commissioner for assistance, by writing to our league e-mail address, thegreenbears@hotmail.com .) Note that we also have some important information for you on our own GFL rulebook page.

We got our regulars signed up, but if anyone decides that they aren't going to participate, let me know. We might be able to find someone to run your team for you.

Early Leaders

Two weekends are down in the college football contest, and already two of our four players have opened some daylight on the other two. Dave and Jeff are doing well; Tim and Brian are not. The contest scoresheets are available online, so you can compare your picks, see the scores, and print a copy to watch the games with. Looking ahead, your second half picks will be due by 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 14.

You should visit the Greenbears Commissioner's college football website at About.com for the latest features, forums, and chat rooms, all through the season. This month, I have my top 25 each week, and you can play About CFB Survival, a game in which one team kicks two other teams out each week, until only one survivor is left at the end of the season.

General News

Jeff B. is again leading the NASCAR contest. Go to Yahoo Sports Racing to fix your starting lineup of race drivers and check the scores.

Next month we should have some news about our annual college basketball contest. It will be the same format as last year; I am still wondering if we need to make any changes to the tournament scoring. I am open to suggestions about pro basketball. Hockey? I don't know yet. Sandbox will probably have a hockey contest, but I think we might just wait until playoff time, and have our own playoff-only contest, since no one ever follows the hockey contests during the season.

You can read about all the things we have discussed on our Greenbears website at:
http://brianwilliamson.freeservers.com/greenbears/ .

Well, that's all for this month. We'll have another newsletter in October, with Ultra Baseball Wayne Series results, college basketball and hockey previews, and football contest scores.
